# Can’t Open an App on Your Mac? (Troubleshooting Guide)
If an app on your Front Row Mac won’t open, crashes on launch, or behaves unexpectedly, try these steps before escalating to IT.
---
## Common Causes
Apps may fail to open due to:
- Missing or corrupt permissions
- Outdated app or macOS version
- Device management restrictions
- Security or privacy settings
- Installation errors or expired licenses
---
## Step 1 – Restart Your Mac
A restart clears cached processes and often fixes temporary glitches.
1. Click the **Apple menu **.
2. Select **Restart…**.
3. After reboot, try opening the app again.
If the problem persists, continue.
---
## Step 2 – Check System Updates
1. Click the **Apple menu ** → **System Settings**.
2. Go to **General → Software Update**.
3. Install any pending **macOS updates**.
4. Restart if prompted, then try the app again.
---
## Step 3 – Try Opening the App from Applications
Sometimes dock shortcuts or aliases are broken.
1. Open **Finder**.
2. Go to **Applications**.
3. Locate the problematic app (e.g., Slack, Zoom, Chrome).
4. Double-click it to open.
If it opens from Applications, remove and re-add it to your Dock if needed.
---
## Step 4 – Reinstall via Self Service
If the app is IT-managed:
1. Open **Self Service**.
2. Locate the app in the catalog.
3. Click **Reinstall** (or **Install** if it’s not present).
4. Wait for the status bar to complete.
5. Try launching the app again.
---
## Step 5 – Confirm You Have Required Access
Some apps require:
- **Temporary admin rights** for updates or certain components
- VPN connectivity (for specific internal tools)
If you receive permission prompts:
- Use the SOP: **Get Temporary Admin Rights on a Front Row Mac**.
- If it’s a VPN-dependent app, confirm VPN is connected if required.
---
## Step 6 – Check Network Connection
For cloud-based apps (Slack, Zoom, Drive, etc.):
1. Make sure you are connected to Wi-Fi.
2. Confirm by opening a webpage in **Chrome** or **Safari**.
Poor or blocked connectivity can cause apps to appear “stuck” on launch.
---
## When to Contact IT
If the app still won’t open after these steps:
- Take a screenshot of any error messages.
- Note what you’ve already tried.
- Email **help@frontrowgroup.com** with:
- App name and version (if known)
- Whether this is a new issue or recurring
- Your device type (Mac, OS version if known)
